ADOPT a greyhound

If you have a greyhound sized space in your heart and home that you’re ready to fill, our adoption process is designed to find the best match between hound and family.

We carefully match on a case-by-case basis, evaluate the temperament of the greyhound and the needs of adopters to find the perfect match!

A whole new world of family love can take adjustment for your BFF (best friend forever), that’s why we have a 3-week trial. Adopters benefit from the support of an Application Coordinator to help settle their hound into pet life.

To offer a greyhound their happily ever after, fill in an application form and an Application Coordinator will be in touch. Adoption gives a hound the opportunity to live their best life as a pet, companion and family member.

Adoption fees are $395 and $250 for a senior hound (8years+). All hounds are desexed, vaccinated, microchipped, flea, worm and heartworm treated. Fees include a Starter Kit containing collar, leash and muzzle. Discounts available to concession holders, and if you have adopted through Greyhound Rescue previously.

foster to ADOPT (f2A)

99.9% sure you want to adopt a greyhound, but something is holding you back? We take as much care in matching a hound to your family to those adopting. F2A means you take on the responsibility in providing a safe home for a hound as well as costs for feeding and monthly flea/ tick/ worming medication. While the irresistible qualities of your hound fill your heart, they remain available for adoption.

There’s no fixed timeline for F2A, however, just as music can’t be on repeat forever, we will contact you after 3 weeks to see if you would like to give your hound a forever home. You will be supported by an Application Coordinator as you settle your hound into pet life. If F2A isn’t for you, go straight to adopting a hound – we match hounds to homes on a case-by-case basis, with a 3-week trial.

FOSTER a Greyhound

Foster carers experience all the good feels and play an important role at Greyhound Rescue. They are our golden hearts.

Things often happen in threes and that is a certainty for our foster carers.

Firstly, they help a hound learn how to become a pet, secondly, they free up a space at our Rescue Centre for us to save another hound & thirdly, they get to experience the joy & love of a greyhound.

Foster Carers will be provided with ongoing support from an Application Coordinator as you start a hound on their journey to pet life, along with the farewell into their forever family. We have no set timeframe on foster care; however, the average placement is 1 to 4 months, we work to accommodate the availability of our foster carers. Greyhound Rescue pays all necessary vet bills and medications, we provide food for your foster hound and loan bedding, toys and other essentials.

If fostering isn’t right for you consider adopting a hound – we match hounds to homes on a case-by-case basis, with a three-week trial.

“We chose Greyhound Rescue because of their ethical rescue and rehoming policies. It was really important to us, and we valued Greyhound Rescue’s approach to matching a hound to our lifestyle.”

– Rebecca, Greyhound Rescue adopter

“Greyhound Rescue were really thorough in their approach and we felt comfortable that we would be supported. Being first-time greyhound owners, we were grateful for all the information that we were given. They really took the time to answer all our questions and the support they offered after we brought our hound home was so valuable.”

– Magdalena, Greyhound Rescue adopter

“Being a foster carer with Greyhound Rescue is awesome. The hounds that need a bit of extra care are the ones who benefit most from being in foster care. I’ve had eleven foster dogs now; from scared ones, to sick ones… even one with three legs! It is so rewarding and such a great way to help more hounds.”

– Cassie, Greyhound Rescue foster carer

‘Greyhounds are such gentle loving creatures. What you lose in couch space, you gain in friendship. We couldn’t be without him in our lives’

‘We have loved watching him overcome his anxieties, opening up and becoming more playful and loving each day. He is a timid boy until you get to know him, but his personality is excitable, cheeky and loving, with the sassiest side eye!’

‘In addition to the love my foster hound shows, I love knowing that opening my home to him meant another hound could be rescued by Greyhound Rescue…Fostering gave me a great sense of responsibility and privilege’

‘Working from home, I said yes straight away when I knew he needed someone committed to help him learn to be okay by himself for short periods. It was amazing to see his personality reveal week after week I wouldn’t hesitate to recommend people foster through Greyhound Rescue. I was supported at every step…provided guidance, tips and the occasional ear…’

‘Credit to our hounds foster carers who worked hard with his training and setting him up for success’
