HOW to HELP

Greyhound Rescue is predominantly volunteer-run and we rely on donations and fundraising to rescue, rehabilitate and rehome greyhounds in need. There are a number of ways you can help us to save the lives of greyhounds and give them a new life as a family pet.

Volunteer

Volunteers are the very backbone of what we do at Greyhound Rescue, and we are always grateful for more help. Our kennel volunteers care for the hounds at Greysland, our facility in Sydney’s southern rural fringe.

In this role you will provide basic care to greyhounds and attend to their daily needs, including cleaning kennels and performing animal handling duties. You will be part of a fun, welcoming and dedicated team who share a commitment to helping and caring for greyhounds.

To volunteer you must:

  • Have a love of greyhounds and a commitment to their welfare
  • Complete online training and attend an induction shift
  • Have your own transport; Greysland is not accessible by public transport
  • Be available for a minimum of one, *4-hour shift per month and commit to the shifts you have agreed to, communicating any changes or cancellation in advance (where possible)
  • Be at least 18 years of age

(* or 4 hours per month of administrative time for non kennel roles)

“My shift at the kennels is the highlight of my week. A place where you are greeted with open paws, big smiles and no judgment. It is definitely rewarding on so many levels but seeing the dogs go to their forever homes is the absolute highlight. For me it has been life changing in the best possible way.”

– Shelley, Greyhound Rescue Volunteer

“We make a difference. Not only to the dogs we save, but also the families who adopt. It’s so rewarding to be part of the team that makes it all happen.”

– Ausilia, Greyhound Rescue Volunteer

“Best parts of volunteering? Getting to meet & help with the rehabilitation of these beautiful dogs, the feeling you get when you see them leave the kennels and go with their forever family to their new home and the camaraderie amongst the volunteers.”

– Sandra, Greyhound Rescue Volunteer

BECOME A GREYHOUND GUARDIAN

As a Greyhound Guardian, you’ll receive everything needed to care for your foster greyhounds at your onboarding day, including a bed, harness, collar, lead, muzzle, coat, slow feeder, treats, toys and more. Greyhound Rescue also provides kibble, Simparica, any required medications, and covers all vet and behavioural training costs.

You’ll receive a Greyhound Guardian Information Kit, have all key information explained during onboarding, and be added to our dedicated GG chat group. This group offers 24/7 support, opportunities to connect with fellow Guardians, share stories and photos, ask questions, and be part of a supportive, family-like community.

Being a Greyhound Guardian means committing to repeat short-term fostering, with placements typically lasting 3–8 weeks. When a suitable forever family is found, a Meet and Greet is arranged at our Rescue Centre. If the trial proceeds, we create a chat group between you and the new family, and encourage you to share valuable insights about your foster greyhound’s personality, habits and preferences to help them settle in.

After a greyhound goes on trial, you may choose to welcome another foster immediately or take a break. Most Guardians foster around 4–5 greyhounds per year, but the level of involvement is entirely up to you.

“I’ve been part of the Greyhound Guardian program for the past few months, and prior to that I also fostered with GR. One of the things I truly value about this program is the incredible support I receive from the coordinator, kennel manager, and the broader Greyhound Guardians team.
Everyone is so kind, approachable, and always willing to offer guidance, practical advice, or simply words of encouragement when needed. Knowing that this level of support is there makes a real difference and creates such a positive experience.
Being part of such a caring and supportive community makes it much easier for me to focus on giving my foster boy the patience, care, and preparation he needs as he gets ready for his forever home.”

– GG Margot

“Being a Greyhound Guardian is one of the most rewarding—and entertaining—things I’ve ever done. Greyhounds are often described as 45 km/h couch potatoes, and that couldn’t be more accurate! It’s a joy watching them discover the simple pleasures of pet life like soft beds, toys, treats, and the fact that sofas are apparently their birthright. Every foster greyhound has their own quirky personality, and seeing them grow in confidence before heading off to their forever home is incredibly special. While it’s always bittersweet to say goodbye, knowing they’ve found a loving family makes it all worthwhile—and then there’s room on the couch for the next one!”

– GG Katja

“I think the community of other GG has supported the greyhounds through their journey, but also me.”

– GG Bernie

“I love sponsoring through the Help a Hound program. I’m unable to adopt or foster and can’t get to kennels to physically volunteer, so this really feels like something I can easily do to make a difference. It’s not a lot of money, but for me, sponsoring helps me feel I’m doing something meaningful.”

– Laura, Help A Hound Sponsor

“I sponsor because I can’t fit any more hound beds in my house! Since I can’t have any more greyhounds in my life, sponsoring is a great way to assist other hounds in their journey to their new lives. I love receiving my cards and finding out what my sponsored hound has been up to. Every time I look at their photos on my shelf, it fills me with joy and satisfaction.”

– Ewe Lin, Help A Hound Sponsor

“I have been sponsoring greyhounds through GR for several years and it’s always rewarding to know each hound has gone on to a comfy sofa in a loving home. Each new sponsored hound’s photo takes pride of place on our fridge door where visitors can admire them and I get to wax lyrical about the ‘greyt’ job Greyhound Rescue do finding furever homes for greyhounds.”

– Michele, Help A Hound Sponsor
