Time to party? It’s fun to celebrate your pup’s birthday or gotcha day, but it is important to make sure that you’re giving them food that’s dog safe. Here’s a great recipe for some perfect for pupper-and-human-friendly pupcakes that your hound is sure to love. Not sure what foods to avoid for your houndy? Read more about no-no human foods here.

INGREDIENTS

Pupcakes

  • 1 cup self-raising flour
  • ½ cup oats
  • 1 cup sweet potato puree
  • ½ cup apple puree
  • 2 tablespoons coconut oil
  • 3 tablespoons peanut butter*
  • 1 egg

Icing

  • ½ cup natural Greek yoghurt*
  • 3 tablespoons peanut butter*
  • Honey to taste
  • Blueberries to decorate

METHOD

Pre-heat oven to 180 degrees Celsius. Place all ingredients for your pupcakes into a large bowl and mix until just combined before spooning the mixture into pattie pans. If you think your hound might jump in and eat the whole she-bang then make sure you use paper pans, alternatively you can use silicone pans and remove them before your hound indulges.

Bake for 18-20 minutes, pupcakes are cooked when a skewer comes out clean. This recipe is for 6 large pupcakes, if you would prefer smaller pupcakes then reduce the baking time, a whole cake will need a little longer.

Remove your pupcakes from the oven, once cooled they’re ready to ice. Whisk the yoghurt, peanut butter, and honey in a bowl. If it is a little runny then leave it to set up in the fridge before spooning on top of the pupcakes and adding blueberries to decorate and you’re ready to party!

*IMPORTANT NOTE: be sure to check and double check that your peanut butter and yoghurt do not contain artificial sweetners, especially xylitol as it is fatal to dogs
To make your apple and sweet potato purees from scratch is easy, all you need to do is take half a medium-sized sweet potato and a large apple, cut them up and place in a saucepan. Cover with water and boil for 10 minutes or until easily pierced with a fork. Add the sweet potato and apple to a blender and add around 1/4 cup of the liquid from the saucepan and blend until smooth. Be careful when blending hot ingredients, it’s best to allow it some time to cool first.
