A Year in the Life of the Leaning Tower of Ziggy

Feb 17, 2022 | Success Stories

Ziggy (formerly known as ‘Ike’) is a sweet, loving, goofy and confident hound who found his forever home with mum Lisa just over 12 months ago.

“Ziggy has been the perfect addition. Living alone, I wouldn’t have survived lockdown without him; our daily walks and exploring to find new bushwalks in our own backyard has been the perfect distraction,” said Lisa.

“He greets people by muzzling in for a “groin hug”, before siding up next to them as close as possible for pats and leaning so hard they need to brace themselves so they don’t fall over (hence his nickname, “The Leaner“)!

“His love for walkies and sense of adventure is unrivaled. He will walk rain, hail or shine – completely unphased even in the middle of a downpour, proudly strutting down the street.

“All of our neighbours know and love Ziggy, and we frequently get stopped so they can say hello and give him a big pat.

Lisa says while its easy to focus on all the positives and special moments of Ziggy’s adjustment to pet life, there have been a lot of ‘real’ moments and learning experiences too.

“Ziggy is very expressive, and he showed me early on that he was quite reactive to other dogs – he would bark, lunge and freeze when we saw other dogs on our walks.

“Over time and with lots of treats, we were able to begin desensitisation training. We’re now at the stage where Ziggy can come off to the side of the footpath and focus on me (and his treats!) while another dog walks past.

“He’s come so far and I’m so unbelievably proud of him.

“If you are thinking of adopting a greyhound – absolutely go for it!

“They are the most beautiful dogs, so loving, funny, kind and gentle – and although you will be saving their lives, they will also save yours.

“Greyhound Rescue goes above and beyond. They have this “knack” of selecting a hound that’s a match made in heaven. Ziggy came into my life as if he was always meant to be here.

“Every day with Ziggy is a laugh. He is such a beautiful, funny character and brings so much joy into my life!”
