Beautiful Strudel finds life’s pretty sweet

Having exhibited anxiety as a ‘Kennel Kid’ at our Rescue Centre, Greysland, Strudel was lucky enough to spend time in a couple of foster homes before being adopted by Emma, Ben and fellow Greyhound Rescue alumnus Stretch.

Emma, a GR volunteer, has plenty of experience in greyhound care but also credits Strudel’s foster carers for working hard with his training and setting him up for success.

“Strudel has adapted to home life with us so well. We were so nervous when we first took him home, worried that he wouldn’t get along with our resident houndie, Stretch. After a few minor bumps, they settled into a routine and are now great housemates. They’re both still learning about personal space though – mostly not walking on each other!”

Finding his forever home has in turn helped Strudel find his zen. He’s calmer now – “a snuggly, easy-going boy, content to lounge around with the hoomans,” says Emma. “He loves to meet new people, greeting them with enthusiasm and demanding pats. He’s very clever and learns quickly.”

Many greyhound owners will be familiar with the ‘paw of more’, but Strudel has perfected the lick of more as a way of prolonging pats. “Expect to get a quick lick of the hand if you stop patting him before he’s ready,” says Emma. “He also has a gorgeous long bushy tail, and he often manages to keep wagging it as he sits down. It’s super cute.”

Emma and Ben don’t hesitate to urge others to consider adoption. “It’s hard to put into words but there is just something so special about greyhounds. They are so quirky and goofy but so incredibly loving. Greyhound Rescue has such a great process and really go to great lengths to match you with the right kennel kid. And they’re always available when you need support, which is so important.”

From anxious rescue to treasured pet, Strudel now enjoys the simple things in life: walks, sniffing around the garden, and chilling on the grass in the sunshine, watching the birds and the planes in the sky.
