A Successful Trivia Night

thanks

A BIG thank to everyone involved in our annual Trivia Night. To the 110 people who attended and also to everyone who donated items and contributed to the running of the event to make this our most successful Trivia Night to date. The evening raised a much needed $6297!!! We are blown away by everyone’s participation in whatever capacity and are thankful for every bit.

All of the proceeds go directly to saving and rehoming the hounds and without such generosity GR could not do the work we do. We look forward to seeing you all and many more at our next fundraising event!

Astrid (Homed)

Astrid is kindly sponsored by Nicola, Lisa, Sue, Shelley, Belinda & The No Meat Athelete Team.

Hi I’m Astrid! I might have one of the cutest needle noses you have ever seen but hidden beneath I’m a cheeky playful possum that will do everything I can to get my own way (extra snacks, cuddles, playtime…) I’m also a water baby and love to dip my feet in the water bucket, my only problem is I still can’t figure out how to get all four in there so I might have to take some yoga classes to figure out how to do it! If you had somewhere for a paddle pool at your house I might just fit in there somewhere – don’t forget I need a comfy couch too! I’m a friendly girl but would be best in a home without pocket pets or cats. If you are interested in me or any of my greyhound friends contact info@greyhoundrescue.com.au

Racing Ban Reversal

While we are extremely disappointed with the planned reversal on the greyhound racing ban in NSW, we at Greyhound Rescue will continue to do as we have always done – continue to rescue and rehome hounds that need our help. We are not activists as all our energy and limited resources is focused on rescue – but we will always support those that do and will continue to fight for an end to greyhound racing however we can.

Regardless of the announcement today it is not the end of the greyhounds’ journey or their story.

A lot of people have put in a tremendous effort to be their voice and a lot of progress has been made – the plight of greyhounds and their welfare have been put in the spotlight like never before. The Racing Industry has been put on notice, and will be watched very closely for the changes that have been, and are planned to be made. We welcome anything that improves the welfare of the hounds.

We have had an increase in adoptions following the release of the Special Commission of Inquiry’s Report in July and have been flooded with enquiries and messages. Our volunteers have been working harder than ever before behind the scenes to keep up! Let’s not lose that momentum – keep sharing, keep supporting us and other independent rescue groups, and being the voice for greyhounds throughout Australia. Whatever the government is doing our work does not stop. The greyhounds that need our help can’t wait for politicians, they need us every day!

Thank you to all of our supporters and sponsors for all the encouragement, support, and fund raising to help us do our job. As we get no official help we could not have saved and homed over 1000 greyhounds without you – that is the power of a community. And finally an enormous thankyou to all of our volunteers in their various roles for sacrificing so much to help the hounds. We will never give up.

Hi I’m Nigella! Although I’m not quite Nigella Lawson I’m excellent in the kitchen – you can rely on me for any taste testing as well as disposing of any leftovers. I’m a little cheeky, but after a zoom around with my toys I’m perfectly happy to be curled up. Nothing much phases me I can snooze away no matter the location, although I have been accused of sleeping on the job at GR stalls…. I think they are just jealous they don’t look this good while snoring their heads off. If you are interested in me or any of my friends get in touch info@greyhoundrescue.com.au

UPDATE 13/9/16

Not only has Peggy Sue gone on trial but thanks to all of you and your generosity whether sharing or giving we have raised $1695 out of the $5000 we need!! This is fantastic and we are humbled by everyone’s generosity. We still have  a bit to go so please keep sharing our goal!

peggy-on-trial-1

“Hi I’m Peggy- Sue! I’m here to tell you my story about my dramatic arrival to GR!

I arrived with my friends Elly-May and JK in the early hours of a Friday morning but we weren’t feeling too good. Lucky for us our transporter got us here super quick but all of us were dehydrated and in such poor condition we needed to go straight to the dogtors! Imagine that, it was like an episode of ER! OK, well maybe not quite the same as that George Clooney wasn’t on call but we did have some very nice Dogtors and Dognurses. Covered in fleas and full of worms, and all of us needing to put on weight we were a sorry sight and in need of urgent TLC.

We had to stay in the houndie hospital for a few days to have fluid therapy and start medication  -but we all made it through! We are feeling  much better now and we have all put on weight especially me I was very skinny and SO HUNGRY! My poor little bones were poking out and I wasn’t as good looking as I am now. The thing is, although we were saved and GR are generously supported by the dogtors at Vineyard Vets Greyhound Rescue still has a very big bill to cover!  Our emergency care as well as a lot of new arrivals that needed vetwork last mont cost over $4700!!! That is an awful lot to save us houndies and get us ready for our forever homes. Do you think you guys could help us out, just a little bit? You can?! We love you already!”

Thank you everyone for your continued support and generosity. If you are able to help us again and spare a few dollars to help us out with our vet bill for our saved hounds we would appreciate it. If you can’t help us out on this occasion please share our post – every dollar counts!

The Ban Goes Through! A Message From Our Founders

Mikey 2
Peter and Janet would like to thank everyone for their continued support since the racing ban was announced on July 7th.  Thank you to all of you who have called and written to your own as well as many other State MP’s to support Premier Mike Baird’s brave decision and put an end to Greyhound Racing in NSW from July 1st 2017. We are amazed by the historic and momentous moment that took place in State Parliament in the early hours of 24th August 2016 and acknowledge and thank everyone’s commitment and contributions large or small wherever you are to get our beloved greyhounds to this day.
The work isn’t over yet. Once again we would like to assure everyone that our top priority is the hounds welfare and we will continue to work hard to find homes for the greyhounds that will no longer be wanted. We are already in contact with the task force that has been put in place to begin the enormous job that lies ahead to save and rehome the greyhounds and in the coming weeks and months there are many groups and people who are going to be very busy!
We would also like to remind everyone that although greyhound racing in NSW will end next year, our friends in other states are still working and speaking up to make it an end Australia wide. Keep writing, calling, and being the voice for greyhounds everywhere.
What can you do to help us now?
Adopt, foster, sponsor, or volunteer. Spread the word for us. Tell people about the work we do! We always are in need of donations whether it is funds to pay our many bills or items for our kennels. The hounds appreciate every little bit that comes our way.
Thank you to every single one of our volunteers past and present who have put in an incredible amount of work, and your commitment and dedication to the greyhounds in our care. Whether hands on at kennels, or the hive of activity behind the scenes, the enormous amount of time sacrificed has not gone unnoticed.  We also give a massive thank you to all of our sponsors and donors without whom we could not have done or continue to do the work we do. Let’s celebrate this amazing news!

Hiya I’m Mikey and I arrived just after my namesake Mike Baird announced that greyhound racing was going to be banned in NSW! Just like Mike I had a little mishap so I haven’t been available to adopt until now but oh boy are you going to fall in love with me! Not only am I incredibly good looking, smart, and ever so cuddly I am one cool dude. I loooooove the ladies, I’m great with kiddies, and an all round nice guy. I’m looking for a career in investment loving (I give you back 1000% on your love) and I’ll leave politics to the experts. I just want to hang out with you on your lounge, have a good walk, and catch up on snoozing. If you are interested in me or any of my kennel mates get in touch with the volunteers info@greyhoundrescue.com.au

Spike (Homed)

Hi ya I’m Spike, and unlike my name I’m not spikey at all! I am a relaxed cool dude looking for my forever couch. I have a extra special quirk in that I love to “grin” when I say hello to people so although it looks  a bit scarey I promise you I’m the goofiest laid back lad around! Now wouldn’t you love a dog with that extra special talent?I’m great with kiddies, and I am fairly relaxed around smaller dogs so far. Really, I’m just a loveable lump of hound that I know you won’t be able to resist. Get in touch with the volunteers info@greyhoundrescue.com.au
