The Great River Walk in Penrith is a perfect day out for you and your houndie! The 6.4km loop follows the riverbank along the Nepean River, with spectacular views of the Nepean River, the Blue Mountains, birds and other wildlife (not to mention, unlimited sniffs!)
Where: Penrith, NSW. The walk is within walking distance of Penrith and Emu Plains stations. Parking is available at Tench Reserve, Weir Reserve or Regatta Park.
Length/duration: The walk is a 6.4km loop. You can go either way, but most people choose to start walking along the east side of the river along Tench Ave, crossing to the north side via the Yandhai pedestrain crossing. Once on the north side, you can either stick to the path along the road (this is where most of the joggers/ cyclists/ mum’s with prams walk) OR take the quieter track that runs along the riverbank. Greyhound Rescue recommended as this track is much more interesting for the hound, less pedestrian traffic and is far more scenic!
Opening hours: The walk itself is open all day every day, however if you are parking at Tench Reserve, the following opening hours apply:
- Summer (Oct-Mar) – 5am-9pm
- Winter (Apr-Sept) – 6am-8pm
On lead/off-leash? On-leash only
For the hounds: There are no poo-bag dispensers or dog drinking fountains along the walk. One set of wide, easy-grade stairs. A section of the walk is along the stretch of the M4 Great Western Hwy. This section of the walk is very noisy due to traffic which maybe scary for some hounds.
For the humans: At Tench Reserve, there are BBQs, sheltered picnic tables, park benches, kids play areas, accessible public toilets and plenty of free parking! East Bank Fish & Chips do the best battered fish ever! You can order take away and sit in park at the river’s edge or dine in the precincts alfresco areas which are dog friendly. Toilets, play areas and picnic tables can also be found in Regatta Park on the north side of the walk.
