What was it that sparked your interest in volunteering with Greyhound Rescue?
When I first learnt about the plight of greyhounds, the incredibly depressing stories of their lives as race dogs and the frightening statistics about greyhound racing, I decided I’d like to help in some ‘hands on’ way. I found Greyhound Rescue, their ‘no kill’ policy was very important to me and I enquired about volunteering
How long have you been volunteering and what shifts/role do you do?
I began volunteering in October 2013 and have been doing the Tuesday morning kennel hand shift ever since! In addition to my kennel shift I have recently taken on an Adoption Co-ordinator role also.
What’s the best thing about being a Greyhound Rescue volunteer?
Volunteering with Greyhound Rescue has allowed me to see how these dogs transform and make the most wonderful addition to your family. They are forgiving and resilient, loving and gentle, often despite coming from the most undesirable of situations. The amazing people you meet volunteering has also made me feel part of a team dedicated to the welfare of these dogs.
What skills have you picked up during your time as a volunteer?
I’ve learnt so much since volunteering about animal behaviour, training, health and communication. Also, about the surrender, welfare and adoption processes for the dogs, and the dynamic and complicated aspects to running a rescue.
Why would you recommend volunteering with Greyhound Rescue?
Volunteering with GR has been my favourite part of the week for many years now, and I love being part of such a dedicated team of people and seeing the rescue go from strength to strength. Being part of a hound’s journey to ‘live their best life’ is so rewarding. I get so attached to the kennel kids and playing a small part in them going off to live with their new family is a wonderful feeling.
