Topaz found her forever home with Greyhound Rescue volunteer Liza and partner Jeffrey. She fast became so much more than just a pet; she is part of the family. And like her namesake, Topaz is an absolute gem.
Topaz adapted to her new life in a home so quickly, with her beautiful personality and easy-going temperament immediately showing through.
“Considering Topaz didn’t know what city and apartment living was like, she adapted so quickly,” says Liza. “She mastered our two flights of stairs and a lift within a couple of weeks, and walking around a busy neighbourhood with lots of small dogs she got used to quite quickly.”
“We walk her every morning and it takes about five minutes to get her to get up… she yawns, stretches and then finally when she gets up she does a few yoga stretches (downward & upward facing dog) before she is ready to go. It puts a smile on our face every morning.”
Often referred to as ‘our princess’ in Liza and Jeffrey’s house, they say that Topaz is so loved that “some family members come to visit her rather than us these days, which is a beautiful thing to watch”.
It was the devastating loss of their beloved 20-year-old cat that prompted Liza and Jeffrey to rescue a greyhound.
“When our 20-year-old cat passed it left a huge hole in our hearts and we knew we wanted to fill that hole and rescue a greyhound in need,” explains Liza.
“Topaz rescued us, she healed our hearts and taught us to love again. Greyhounds are quirky and gentle, and with patience, love and gratitude they make you smile and laugh every moment you spend with them.”
“The process of adopting from Greyhound Rescue was phenomenal. It was a very nervous time considering we had never had a dog before and we thought our circumstances may have been difficult (apartment living, stairs, lift, busy area, work full time). But Greyhound Rescue’s adoption process is so well done that they found us the perfect match, and the support to go with it was incredible.”
