Leo Learns Love

Leo the black greyhound on the lounge

The lovely Leo, short for Leonard, has learnt a lot during his life as a pet. He’s learnt to love peanut butter, the best way to remind his humans that it’s time for a walk, how to be a pet, and how great life is with a family who absolutely adore you.

Leo, formerly known as Nambawan, has come out of his shell during his time in his forever home, and pawrents Adam and Melissa say he learns more and more about being a regular dog every day.

“His journey and growth has been more evident over the past couple of months,” Adam explains.

“From being a bit aloof, to only wanting to snuggle up on mum on the couch, to knowing the exact schedule and learning that the grass square on the apartment balcony is the perfect spot for an emergency wee, he has learnt exactly what we expect from him and has shown what we need to give him.”

Leo is happy to spend his days relaxing and looking forward to his next walk.

“If you are late on the walks he will eyeball you from a distance, lay down where he can see you and try to actively persuade you that there is no time like the present to be outside,” says Adam.

“He has also been known to go full zoom when he needs to get that last little bit of energy out!”

On walks these days, Leo will also actively seek out strangers for attention and happily greet other dogs – and if it’s another hound even better! Adam and Melissa think Leo may believe they are all his long-lost cousin!

But his absolute favourite thing to do, is to visit his best friend Einstein (former kennel kid Lamp). And to ‘zoom’ when familiar faces come over for a visit, like when grandma comes over – and seeing his cousin, an American bulldog, for fun in the backyard. Oh, and to eat peanut butter!

“Leo has learnt to love peanut butter toast in the morning,” Adam says.

“Once a sceptical dog about whether this delicious treat dad eats for breakfast is good, he now drools at the sight of a potential corner piece with that delicious spread.”

Adam and Melissa have learnt so much about greyhounds over the past six months, including what an incredibly kind and gentle breed they are. They encourage anyone thinking about adopting to give it a try.

They say the Greyhound Rescue matching process and support really stood out to them.

“Going through the matching process of finding a hound to suit your routine, environment and family definitely made the transition for us and Leo much easier,” Adam and Melissa explain.

“The support from the volunteers at Greyhound Rescue, who you can talk to any time for check ins and answers, is amazing.”

“Combined with the massive online group support, Greyhound Rescue has a huge wealth of knowledge and people looking to help anyone with a hound.”
