A Paw-some Pair: Meet Alegria and Poe

May 24, 2023 | Success Stories

Poe and Alegria are the dynamic duo of greyhounds, say pawrents Grant and Ainslie, enjoying bush trails and food in equal measure. Alegria, also affectionately known as ‘Goblin’, “because she eats faster than Poe, cleans up after him, and tries to eat your fingers to get the snacks you are holding,” is a “ tiny little greyhound, absolutely full of personality. Her teeth chatters are loud and often; she leans hard enough to knock over an adult and she gives out the deepest groans when she stretches. She is a love bug who thinks she is a lap dog and gives the best cuddles.”

“Poe has a short little tail from an unknown injury but this allows him to wag it at the speed of light! He is such a sweet boy who absolutely loves toys- the squeakier the better. Poe came to us reactive to other dogs and we have been working on this over the last year. He is getting much better and his love of snacks helps us with distracting him from other dogs and being able to pass by without incident.”

“It is a common sight to see Poe and Alegria tearing around our unit chasing toys and each other. Alegria loves to start games with Poe which often include her jumping up on the lounge and flapping her front feet at him at warp speed.”

While the two might be greyt friends, their personalities differ, “Poe is such a curious boy, always interested in his surroundings. On walks he will look down every single path, driveway, and door we walk past. At home he loves spending time at the front windows, usually poking his head through the curtains, just watching the world go by outside.”

“Alegria has the bubbliest of personalities and is just full of energy. Meals, that’s worth excitedly dancing around for. Snacks, also worth excitedly dancing around for. Walks, once again worth excitedly dancing around for. You get the picture; she gets excited about everything in her new life.”

“The most special part of the journey has been how the hounds have helped each other and learned from each other. Poe has helped Alegria’s confidence and play to the point she will start playing with him now. Alegria has helped Poe become more affectionate and taught him pack rules after spending his life as an only hound.”

Their lucky pawents “have wanted to adopt a greyhound for a very long time,” and as soon as they were able, they “applied to adopt and we were lucky enough to meet Poe. He has provided us with so much happiness and laughter. I honestly don’t know what life was like before he came along. Then we added Alegria and she was such a perfect friend for Poe because she was used to living with other dogs and her doggy emotional intelligence allowed her to soften up Poe and teach him how to live and play with another dog.”

The journey of adopting a greyhound can be tricky, but they said, “from the first virtual home visit with Lauren we have been so happy with the support we have received.” When asked if they had any advice for potential pawrents, they said, “Adopt two! My partner who has had dogs before says that he has never had a dog as affectionate as our greys. They are such beautiful natured dogs who love people and butt scratches in equal measures.”
