Foster carer Michele fails in the best possible way

Nov 29, 2022 | Foster Stories

Our foster carers play an incredibly important role at Greyhound Rescue. They provide a temporary home for our Kennel Kids needing a helping hand, whether that’s to build confidence, provide them with extra support and training, or provide a safe space for hounds with medical needs.

Lonnie was one such hound. He had lived as a pet for over a year, but had been rehomed following a change in his previous owner’s circumstances. As he was so well accustomed to living in a home, Lonnie was moved straight into a foster home.

He was placed with our long-term volunteer Michele. It wasn’t long until Michele knew she would be failing – in the best way!

“Lonnie is a foster fail and I couldn’t be happier,” says Michelle.

“He made his way into my heart very early on. Once I could see he was comfortable being part of the family, his adoption was a matter of process.”

Michele says Lonnie is the “sweetest of hounds”. A master of the lean, he is affectionately known as the ‘The Leaning Tower of Lonnie’. He’s also the ‘king of naps’ she says, who loves nothing more than a pat and ear scratch.

“Lonnie adapted to my family life like he had been here forever” she explains.

“Giving Lonnie space to settle in with routine and consistency built his confidence and trust in no time.”

“I found my foster coordinator was a wealth of knowledge, providing reassurance and guidance whenever I needed it.”

Michele says her time fostering gave her a great sense of responsibility, and privilege.

“I am always amazed by the affection greyhounds show despite the world they have come from, experiencing it first hand is pretty special,” Michele says.

“The simplicity of showing kindness and love is returned tenfold with a greyhound.”

Michele says one of the best things about fostering was that it meant there was space for another hound at Greysland.

“In addition to the happiness Lonnie brings, I love knowing that opening my home to him meant another hound could be rescued by Greyhound Rescue.”

“I feel so very lucky that Lonnie found his way to me and love being part of the greyhound family.”
