Greyhound Rescue finds loving forever homes for greyhounds no longer wanted by the racing industry. We interviewed Lachlan, who adopted greyhound JC in July 2021, about his adoption experience.
Can you introduce us to JC?
JC (formerly known as Jean Claude) is a boy with two power settings and nothing else. He’s either snoozing or running around like his tail is on fire.
He’s so calm and docile when he’s inside, but as soon as he has his collar on and a breeze on his face, he really comes alive. He loves smelling everything he comes across and taking in the sights and sounds of his surroundings, visibly enjoying every moment to its fullest.
How has JC fit into your family?
He has a special relationship with everyone in the family in their own way. He and I are just your typical besties, he knows my mum is the one to go for the big cuddles, and he knows my dad has a stern façade but is a big softy at heart.
What’s JC’s favourite thing to do?
His absolute favourite thing is a cuddle. He loves nothing more than placing his head in your hands, or walking up to you with his tail swinging wildly and settling in with all his weight for a big pat.
Are there any funny stories about JC that you’d like to share?
I have a bit of a problem with spoiling JC. I spent a considerable amount on a nice fancy bed for the boy (thanks, Afterpay) and he still refuses to sleep on it properly! He settles in with sometimes only as much as a foot on the actual padding, and the rest of him all twisted up on the floor. At least that foot is real comfy though.
What would you say to someone thinking about adopting a greyhound:
If you know a rescue greyhound is what you’re looking for, and you can give them the patience and space they need to grow, then you’ll end up with one of the most pure, compassionate and hilarious fur friends out there. Guaranteed.
There isn’t a day that’s gone by where I haven’t appreciated having JC enter my life. I’m so glad I’m able to give him a life he never knew was possible. Every little creature comfort he takes for granted now was once beyond his comprehension, and to be the one to have opened those doors for him is so rewarding in itself. The bonus is having a dog who appreciates everything you’ve done for them and shows you as much in the best ways.
