Greyhounds are creatures of luxury, and have a sixth sense for seeking out comfy lounging spots. While they may love snoozing on your bed and couch, it’s important for them to have their own safe space in your house; this is particularly important when you first bring your furry friend home.
Pet life is an adjustment for new houndies, so making sure they have a safe, comfortable and cosy place to retreat to when things might feel overwhelming is super important for you and for them!
When considering what type of bed to buy, there is ample choice available. Here are five tips for you to consider before buying a bed for your pup.
Size
Greyhounds enjoy luxury so think soft, padded and plush. Most greyhound’s beds should be at least 1 metre across on one side, and many will enjoy a bed that’s even bigger so they have plenty of room to stretch out in comfort.
Location
The location of your pup’s bed is important. If on a carpeted area, something close to the ground is fine, but if bedding is being placed on a concrete slab, hard floor, or outdoor area we recommend using a trampoline bed which is raised off the ground with a mattress on top. This makes it warmer and comfier for them, which is important otherwise they will forgo their bed in favour of your couch! If you have room, you might even consider having an indoor and outdoor bed for maximum luxury.
Support
There are many beds that are flat, and many that have edges. Edges provide extra support for comfortable roaching, can make their oasis feel super cosy, and they can support your doggos body if they have joint or muscle pain. If you have an elderly hound or a pup with arthritis, consider getting a bed with memory foam mattresses, as this helps ease achey joints and offers them support when they’re lying down and getting up.
Material
Many dogs like nesting, and will dig their beds to make for an extra comfortable resting place. Greyhounds are strong with long nails, so you’ll want the material of the bed to be firm but comfortable. While it may be tempting to get a cheap nylon bed, this will tear easily under their paws so look for thick, durable material for longevity.
Cleaning
Consider getting a bed that has a removable cover for easy cleaning. If your bed doesn’t have this, you can purchase a cover to pop over their bed; while this isn’t strictly necessary, it makes cleaning and upkeep much easier; you’ll be thanking us later when they track mud in and muck up their bedding.
