Pannus – What is it and how is it treated?

What is Pannus?

Pannus is an auto-immune disorder also known as superficial keratitis. It is an eye condition that is more common in greyhounds than other breeds. In extreme cases, if pannus is left untreated, it could lead to blindness. The good news is that it can typically be easily managed with daily drops, and if caught early the progression of the disease can be slowed dramatically.

“Pannus is an immune mediated condition, meaning that it is the result of the body essentially attacking itself. As part of the process there is initial inflammation, and then later discolouration of the outer part of the eye called the cornea.” Says Dr Matt Buchanan-Pascall of Macquarie Veterinary Hospital “It often starts out unnoticed until a big enough part of the eye becomes discoloured and obvious to owners. Typically we see it start on the outer corner of the eye. Pannus is suspected to be a hereditary condition that is made worse with sun exposure.”

What should I do if I think my hound might have pannus?

Ensure your hound has been assessed by a veterinarian. There are some early indicators for pannus that may lead to a diagnosis of ‘pre-pannus’, at which stage you can take some steps to slow the onset of the disease. Your vet may prescribe some medication, or refer your hound to an ophthalmologist to determine the best course of action.

What does treatment for pannus involve?

There are varying stages of progression of pannus, and your vet will help determine the treatment needed. The goal for treating pannus is to decrease any inflammation to prevent further damage to the eye, as damage to the eye can lead to a deterioration in vision and eventually blindness.

“Treatment is usually straightforward and involves steroid eye drops, tacrolimus eye drops or a combination of both. Lifelong treatment is required to ensure the condition doesn’t lead to blindness.” Says Dr Matt

The treatment that your hound needs may change over time, so ensure that your hound has regular vet checks to assess their treatment plan, and if you notice any changes get in touch with your vet for an evaluation.

How can I help my hound who has pannus?

Some environmental management strategies can be put in place to help prevent the progression of pannus. These include:

  • Hounds with pre-pannus may benefit from lubricating eye drops, which will provide some extra moisture to your hound’s eyes and help reduce irritation. Always discuss with your vet before placing anything in your hound’s eye.
  • Avoid walking your hound during extreme weather such and windy or dusty days, and avoid walking during the brightest times of the day.
  • Sun glasses designed for dogs or “doggles” may be a great option for hounds with advanced pannus, as they provide protection from the weather and UV rays, as UV exposure can trigger pannus. You would have seen a photo of the gorgeous Grohl with his doggles above!
