Greyhound Rescue are running the City 2 Surf!

Our team are busy training for this year’s 14km City2Surf – they’re running so the greys don’t have to! But if you’re more of a couch potato like our hounds, don’t worry there’s another way you can help! Sponsor our team and help raise much-needed funds for our rescue greyhounds.

If you’re already in training, why not consider running for us? Anyone is welcome to join team Greyhound Rescue and those who raise $150 in sponsorship will get a yellow Greyhound Rescue T-shirt to wear on the day.

There’s still plenty of time to join in.

A huge thanks to BBC Worldwide

Greyhound Rescue would like to thank the team from BBC Worldwide for its fabulous support today.

This is the second year BBCW has supported Greyhound Rescue’s efforts to rescue, rehabilitate and rehome greyhounds who can no longer race.

The team from BBCW helped prepare overnight accommodation for volunteers who come from far and wide to help Greyhound Rescue and often face a long drive home after a long day’s work.

Markie (on trial)

Hey, I’m Markie… but a lot of people call me Markie Mark. I suppose they think that’s funny… but just between you and me I really am looking for my very own ‘Funky Bunch’ to call my own. I’m a laid back kind of guy with a little bit of a cheeky streak, oh, and I just love my toys (even better if they squeak) so I’m hoping my forever home comes well stocked with those (hint hint)! I’m also super friendly, I get along with everyone I meet so if you’ve got a big or small doggy friend for me or even kids, that would be alright by me!

It’s tax time!

Mina here is busy boning up on Australian tax law to make sure she’s across things now the end of financial year is upon us.

You see, Greyhound Rescue could really use your help. We receive no government funding, and our vet bills, kennel bills, food bills and more just keep on mounting. Yes, it’s the same old story, but try as she might, Mina just can’t balance the books. There’s so much money going out and not enough coming in, which is exactly … er … where YOU come in.

An end-of-financial-year donation will not only help us (so, so much), it will actually help you, too. Donations at this time of year allow you to reduce your taxable income. Plus, it’s no secret that giving simply makes you feel good – studies show altruism has real mental and physical benefits (so you get the warm fuzzies by helping to keep our fuzzy hounds warm!)

So when you’re finalising things for the end of the tax year, please spare a thought for Mina’s fellow houndies, desperately waiting not only for her to get through these textbooks, but for their forever homes as well.

You can donate via bank transfer or PayPal (although please keep in mind PayPal charges fees so we don’t get all of your generosity.).

If you do transfer, please also email peter@greyhoundrescue.com.au to let us know you’ve donated.

The Blaze Memorial Fund

This story doesn’t have a “happily ever after”… Beautiful Blaze – a happy, playful and cheeky boy passed away peacefully this weekend in the arms of our Kennel Manager and GR founder.

He never knew the comfort of a home, nor found his forever home, but he was so loved by our dedicated team of volunteers. He knew human kindness and spent the last of his days safe and surrounded with love thanks to our team. When Blaze wasn’t acting like his usual bouncy self, an MRI revealed a large and inoperable spinal tumour. The kindest thing to do was to let him pass the Rainbow Bridge and stop his suffering.

Blaze never got his fairytale ending, which is heartbreaking. Our volunteers and supporters want nothing more than to find loving homes for all of our hounds and are devastated that beautiful Blaze will never get to find his forever home.

We would like to make a memorial tribute to Blaze, to remind us all to live life to the fullest like Blaze did. Additionally, we have to cover nearly $7000 in bills from Blaze’s treatment. With extra funds, we would like to get some new enrichment toys for all of our Hounds who are left behind, in memory of Blaze, who loved nothing more than  a new toy to play with.

Matty

Hi, I’m Matty and I come with my ears already packed up and ready to go! I’m a handsome, affectionate guy looking for my forever home… or I should say LISTENING for my forever home – nobody has ears quite like mine! I’ve had a bit of a rough start in life, but I’m more than making up for it now at GR HQ… I’m absolutely lapping up all of this new attention! I can be a bit shy with new things at first, but that’s because I’m just starting to learn about this big wide world.

Bjorn

Hi there, I’m Bjorn. I arrived here at Greyhound Rescue in not the best condition but after loads of TLC here from the team at GR HQ I’m doing much better… you might say I’ve been Bjorn again even (hehe)! Because I had a rough start in life, I’ll be looking for an extra special home with an experienced family because I can be a little bit nervous about new things. Which means I’d love a home in a quiet neighbourhood with a yard where I can stretch my legs too. Otherwise, besides my special needs, I’m a very sweet boy and just a bit of a cutie with my little-upturned nose.

Baby Sheldon has a broken leg

What’s cuter than a greyhound puppy? Not much! It is rare that we get the opportunity to rescue a greyhound puppy, but luckily for five-month-old Sheldon, he has been taken into our care. Unfortunately, the reason that he came to us is that he had a badly broken leg that had been left untreated.

We tried everything and, despite expert care, his leg could not be saved. He underwent a second surgery to remove the limb in order to increase his mobility and quality of life. Sheldon is recovering well in foster care, learning to love the home comforts. We need to raise enough money to cover the costs of his surgeries and ongoing vet care.

Please consider making a tax-deductible contribution to help baby Sheldon.

A big thank you to Viacom!

Each year international media network Viacom dedicates one day of the year across the globe where all employees get together and give back to the community.

This year the Viacom team in Sydney chose Greyhound Rescue. Right from the get-go the ‘oohs’ and ‘aahs’ over every beautiful greyhound they met ensured they’d have a wonderful day at our rescue kennels in South West Sydney!

The team helped with walking duties, cleaning the kitchen and food prep area – crawling right inside the cupboards to ensure they were spotless, mopped the floors, swept outside, sorted out towels and blankets, took rubbish to the dumpster, sorted out the winter and autumn coats and were general all-round ‘greyt guys’.
