Volunteers of the Month – January/February 2019

We’d like to introduce you to dynamic duo Kelly and Paul, some of our dedicated volunteers who we are recognising as our ‘Volunteers of the Month’ for the months of January and February.

Our volunteers are the very backbone of what we do at GR. Without them, we could not possibly save and rehome as many greyhounds as we do. While every single one of our volunteers is important no matter how much they do whether hands-on on with the dogs or behind the scenes, every month we are introducing just one of them to you and acknowledging their amazing efforts. Kelly and Paul have demonstrated exceptional passion, commitment, reliability, and cooperation to make GR what it is, and we thank them tremendously.

We had a chat to Kelly and Paul to learn more about why they love volunteering with Greyhound Rescue…

A big thanks to Ethan and Tom for their fundraising efforts!

Greyhound Rescue would like to extend a huge thank you to Ethan Sharp and Tom Metcalfe who have raised over $2000 via sponsorship to complete the Snowies Ultra Trail Run.

The Snowies Ultra Trail Run is a 50km ultra marathon held February 24, 2019, in NSW’s Snowy Mountains and we can’t thank them enough for their massive efforts and raising awareness for our greyhounds in need. Thank you, Ethan and Tom!

Hiya, the name’s Keith but my mates like to call me ‘Keef’. Just like my namesake, I’ve become quite the rock star here at GR HQ, I’ve certainly got a lot of fans! I’ve got loads of personality and I’ve been told that I’m an excellent cuddler. I’m certainly not shy and just love getting out and about. I do have to tell you that my kidneys need a little bit of help, this means I need to be on a special diet* and have to go to the dogtors every six months or so to make sure I’m still doing well.

Now, in true rock star style, it’s all about me…  so while I’m learning this pet caper, it probably best that I’m the centre of your attention for now. Not to worry though, once you meet me you won’t want to share me with anyone else!

A note from Keith’s foster carers:

Keith’s a friendly dog with lots of love and energy. He loves exploring the backyard and people watching on the side of the house. We take him out to the park nearby and he’s eager explorer. Sniffing all the different bushes and trees. He’s an adventurous pooch!

Keith is definitely more of a people dog then a dog’s dog. He’s not shy of strangers and new friends and faces. He can get a bit excited sometimes and jump on people. We are working with a behaviouralist to unlearn this behaviour and he’s getting better at it.

Keith’s experiences walking have been super great. He’s a great walker. Loves It! Rain or shine. He’s good with kids around him. The park nearby has got a playground and he’s not bothered by the kids that visit. Keith does seem triggered by small fluffy dogs though. He doesn’t lunge at them so much, just very alert to the fact that they are there. We’ve only come close to one small pup at a very close distance and he did try and approach before we pulled his leash back.

We’re very excited for Keith future! We think he’d be a perfect dog for a nice family with a big yard for him to zoom and explore. His got quite a lot of energy to burn.

If you think you could be my number one fan, get in touch with the team at info@greyhoundrescue.com.au

*Keith needs to be on Hills KD Kidney Care or Royal Canin Renal diet food. He can have some chicken and fish included in his diet but cannot have too many treats. He also needs to have a blood test every 6-12 months to check in and see how his kidneys are functioning.

Hi! I’m Patches. If you’re looking for a quiet but goofy kind of companion, I might be your guy! I haven’t known much of this big wide world yet but so far since I’ve arrived at GR HQ, I’ve discovered how much I love toys – oh, and nothing is beating a good cuddle and a scratch! I really enjoying the company of people! I’m still very new to this whole pet business, so it’s best that I’m the only doggo in your life while I get used to living in a home. I’m sure it won’t take me long to learn the ropes though!

Hi, I’m Daisy and I am very enthusiastic about life! I just have so much personality and love to share. I find all things in life VERY exciting! I love people, and toys, and did I mention I love people? I do get a bit scared of loud noises like traffic so I don’t think I’m much of a city slicker, and it might be good if you had another greyhound who can help me build my confidence while we’re out and about. I’m a lady who likes her own space too, so if you have a bed that’s all mine then that would be perfect for me! So if you’re happy for us to ease into the walks and give me a bit of space at home while I get used to life as a pet, then I think we’ll be best of friends!

Ola! I’m Churros and I’m a very special boy looking for a very special home. My eyesight isn’t the best you see – the dogtor says I have something called ‘bilateral retinal degeneration’… I don’t know what those all those words mean, I just know that I’m nearly blind and I was born like this so it’s all I’ve known, really.

Now, on to the positives – my eyesight certainly doesn’t bother me, so it shouldn’t bother you (but I still need an extra special home*)! It just means that I’m an extra good listener and detective with my sleuthy snoot! Speaking of my sleuthy snoot, I love enrichment activities where I get to sniff out treats hidden in toys and boxes… I’d love it if my new home would take the time to engage my keen nose to figure out these puzzles.

Just because I’m blind doesn’t mean I’m slow going – I’m still pretty active… I love to play and use my smarts. I’d really love a family that can keep up with me!

So I can live my best life, I’m thinking maybe a smaller house or apartment with a small yard is best for me. Oh, and if I could be your only fur kid while I get my bearings and confidence up, that would work really well. I think I’ve left out the best part – I forgot to tell you that I’m also the sweetest,  cuddliest, and happiest boy you’ll ever meet!!

Hi, I’m Dawson and I’m what you might call a bit of a velcro dog, I’m always happy to see you! I’m good with older kids (maybe some teenagers to throw a toy around with), and LOVE being with people – I’m looking forward to sharing the couch with you if you’ve got a spare spot for me! I don’t ask for much really – a bit of your lounge, a good walk every day and some playtime, and lots of love!

Junior (on trial)

Hi there, I’m Junior! You can tell I’m the goodest boy, because I’ll sit for you! I’m a pretty chilled out dude, I do love my toys but I’m also just happy hanging out and lapping up all the attention. I’m dreaming of a home with lots of space so I can practice some new tricks, so I don’t think the apartment life is for me. While I get on well with other big dogs, they tell me I’ve not quite learned my sharing manners yet (ahem) so probably best as an only doggo for now until I can be the goodest boy I can be. Besides, once you meet me – you won’t want to share me with anybody else!
