Weekend stalls a “Greyt” success!

A huge thank you to wonderful volunteers Verity and her husband Aaron, and Rachel (Oscar and Jen’s new mum) who raised $460 at their stall at Paws in the park Camden last Sunday. It was great to see adopted hounds Greyam (formerly Jazz), and Pip and their mums as well as foster mum Rhianna with foster boy Bones and her hound Chief (so well named!).  Choco is looking for a forever home and did a great job working the crowd.

Mosman Pet’s Day Out was a little more quiet but still plenty of visitors and interest. In fact Barney went home with Anna and family!

Thank you to everyone that helped get the word out that greys make greyt pets. We welcome all ideas for fund and awareness raising, do get in touch if you have any ideas.

Vale Butch

We are saddened to hear of the recent passing of Butch, the first of our hounds to be adopted by a nursing home. He had been giving gentle affection and comfort to the residents of one Sydney Nursing home since November last year. Butch, 9, recently fell ill and was diagnosed with advanced liver cancer so he was sent humanely to the Bridge. The manager of the home says “I would like to thank you for the opportunity to have had Butch in our lives as he was a great companion to myself, residents, staff and visitors. He will be sadly missed.”
We believe that older greyhounds (and indeed many breeds of dog) are brilliantly suited to life in nursing homes – they are quiet and calm, seem to sense when someone needs company and enjoy both giving and receiving constant companionship. It does require the committment of all the staff, to look after the dog as if it is their own but as you can see by Maitland’s experience it is worth it. Please spread the word out in your communities in the hope that more nursing homes will decide to adopt a greyhound to improve not only the residents’ lives but also a greyhound that needs a home.

Trivia Night raises over $3000!

The evening was a great success and we raised over $3300 for Greyhound Rescue, thanks to Portia’s great performance and a great effort by helpers Ann and Karen to help get things organised.

Thank you to everyone who came along to support us and have a great evening out. Particular thanks to those who donated to the evening Virgin Wines, Cumulus Wines, Jenny and Steve’s jewellery and Joe Galea’s generous financial donation. Also thanks to Tracy and Andy for bringing so many friends along.

A great night out and worth the effort involved. We are doing it again on Nov 3rd, so book early not to miss out!

North Sydney Market ‘a la Francais’

The sky was blue, the sun was shining and the crowds were in a festive mood as the Market took on a French Theme for Bastille day. One expected at any moment to see the Tour de France Peloton come racing up Miller St!!

It was a truly beautiful day and resident greyhounds Dozer, Ellie and Solo wooed the crowds and it was good to see the recently adopted Blueboy come along with new Mum and Dad, Tracey and Andy, and newly adopted Lou Lou with Mum Floss.

All in all a very successful and enjoyable day.

Lilly’s emergency – Mosman Vet saves the day

Foster girl Lilly had a very lucky escape this weekend. She was admitted to Mosman Vet yesterday morning after a night of vomiting and bloody diarrhoea.

They put her on a drip, pain relief, antibiotics and ran some blood tests. She stayed overnight with it looking hopeful but still not out of the woods.

Rochelle the vet on duty advised yesterday morning that she was much better and that she had  Hemorrhagic gastroenteritis (HGE).

The progression of HGE is so rapid that hypovolemic shock and death can occur within 24 hours so we are extremely lucky to have gotten her to the vet in time. The cause is unknown and it’s not contagious. The most suspected cause is food.

The bill is being very generously reduced by Mosman vet as they fully support Greyhound Rescue’s work. In fact Rochelle joked the last thing they want happening is for all the money they raised on the run to be paying for this bill!

We are posting this story to ensure all our foster carers and adopters are aware of HGE and its symptoms and to be sure not to ignore the symptoms of blood in stools and vomiting in their hounds (or any dog in fact).

Lilly is resting comfortably back in foster care. We sincerely thank all at Mosman vet for their care of Lilly and support of  Greyhound Rescue.

Thank you Mosman Vet!

Mosman Vets ran 10km in the 2012 Mini Mos to raise $2180 for greyhound Rescue.  Thank you Mosman Vet!

There were seven runners consisting of Rachele (practice partner), Abbie the vet, Callum (Rachele’s son), Vic (one of our star nurses), Steve (Vet student and employed by Mosman Vets), Kate (another star nurse) and Angus the Animal Attendant.

Everyone finished, cheered on by their supporters and half a dozen hounds.
