Charles Sturt University – Lexie Thompson

Charles Sturt University reported on one of Greyhound Rescue’s busy volunteers.

Meet Lexie! Lexie is studying a Bachelor of Emergency Management online at Charles Sturt, works as a police dispatcher, and volunteers at Greyhound Rescue’s kennels. To celebrate National Student Volunteer Week, we sat down with Lexie to chat all things work, study – and dogs!

“I’m the first in my family to go to university. I’ve always had an interest in emergencies and disasters, and the processes around how they are managed. A lot of my friends are in the Police Force and completed their degrees at Charles Sturt, so I knew the uni had a great reputation!

“As a volunteer at Greyhound Rescue, I spend my time feeding the hounds, cleaning their kennels, introducing them to prospective new parents and give them lots of play and cuddles! Everything we do is so important until they find their forever family. They are amazing dogs.

“My course has helped me to create the emergency documents for Greyhound Rescue, bringing attention to the need for our community to be ready in case of an emergency. Keeping those hounds safe is our priority. As the kennels are in a bush fire zone, I used the skills and knowledge learned in my course to complete a risk assessment and emergency plan.

“My job can be very high pressured. When you call 000 and ask for the police, I take your details and send the police to you. I regularly deal with all sorts of incidents, from noise complaints and car alarms to violent domestics and armed robberies. You can become desensitised to a lot of things. That’s another reason why I love hanging out with the houndies. They help you feel and show compassion.”
