Oscar’s Op

We have already said that Oscar was put into the Pound with a bad foot, what we did not say was how bad that foot was. An X-Ray revealed that one of Oscar’s toes was broken and the infection was so bad that it had gone into the bone. The only remedy was to remove the toe, this took place on Monday and even with his foot heavily bandaged, Oscar is already walking much better. To illustrate how sensitive greyhounds are, the photo shows Meggie lying close to Oscar as if comforting him. Well done Meggie!!

We are happy to see Oscar walking properly again and in much better spirits but the downside of Oscar’s Op is that these things cost money, so if anyone would like to make a donation to contribute towards the cost, we would be most grateful.

Norma Faulkner, Past President of DABS

Today it was my privilege to attend the funeral of Norma Faulkner, a remarkable lady who passed away recently at the age of 86. Norma was President of DABS, Domestic Animal Birth-Control Society, one of the oldest animal rescue groups in Sydney and I had tremendous admiration for Norma. She was teaching in a High School at the age of 86 until last December, as well as being President of the society and also looking after numerous dogs herself. Apart from this, Norma helped us at Greyhound Rescue when we were trying to get off the ground and nothing was too much trouble for her, she was always willing to help and advise and we will always be very grateful to her for that.

Norma published a number of books, one of them about ‘Blue Star’ the greyhound. She actually rescued a blue greyhound not too long ago and called him Blue Star, who is now happily in a home. The book would make excellent reading for children learning about greyhounds.

Thank you Norma from Greyhound Rescue and all the greyhounds for your help and may you rest in peace.

Busy and successfull week end

This has been a very busy but satisfying week end. First of all Serena has completed her trial period and found her forever home, while Daisy has gone to a home and started her trial period. Also Biddy has started with a new foster carer, a young lady who wants to do lots to help us. Furthermore, Scotty, a Cairns Terrier X who has been with us for a long time and needed a special home, appears to have found that home in Coffs Harbour, so on Saturday we had a long drive up to Taree to meet his new Mum and Dad. And what happened on the way back? Yes you guessed it, we picked up two more greyhounds from the Kurri Kurri pound, Rusty a brindle boy and Oscar a black boy. We will have their pictures up as soon as poss.

More good news is that we are having an excellent response to our request for foster carers and hopefully within the next week several more greyhounds will be in a new foster home or even adopted home. So a big thank you to all of you who have called in to help.

George is the name for new boy

Monty, Spot and George give us three new names and no two people can agree on any one name!! So the chairman has the casting vote and as we have a faithful, old George who will not be with us much longer, I would like to call him George.

Name for ‘New Boy’

So far we have Ike, Henry, Oscar and Monty as suggestions and thank you to Jilke, Cindi, Demander and Mechelle for sending them in. Is there any support for any of these or further suggestions? We must name the poor boy soon as we can’t keep saying ‘oy you over there’!!

We Desperately need your help

Asking for help and financial assistance is always difficult, but right now Greyhound Rescue is under great financial strain.

We have  vet bills, food bills, kennel bills, etc  all of which are being paid from donations.

Your donations will ensure that we can keep going on to save these beautiful dogs.

Thanks you

Peter and Jan

An insight into greyhound racing

When our website was launched recently, we decided we wanted it to be a ‘happy’ one. However, we also feel we should let the public know what happens to many greyhounds in the industry, so that you can make your own decision on whether or how you want to help the greyhounds. There are always greyhounds coming into the Pounds in Sydney, cast offs no longer of any use to the trainers, too slow, too old, etc and if we could find more homes or foster homes, then we would be able to take more greyhounds that come into the Pounds and save their lives, as the alternative is that they are euthanaised by the Pounds. Beautiful creatures that have only lived a fraction of their normal life span and not always in good conditions.

Adopt or foster a greyhound, save a life and get to know how social and affectionate these greyhounds really are.

The link below is graphic but factual.

Life begins at 10

Further to our reports of Remy and Tassie, here are two photos to show that life begins at 10 for them, running off leash in Jindabyne, where it might be cold but that is no problem when you are rugged up and running at 40mph, or close to it!!Tassie

Two new greyhounds

Today, Saturday 4th July, we received two new greyhounds from the Pound. They are both beautiful, one is a white red fawn and the other is a white blue fawn and their details will appear as soon as we can get some photos taken. The only problem is that they will have to go into kennels as we do not have any room at home, so if anyone can foster them or one of them we would be most grateful, as kennel bills are mounting up.
We also have to thank Forestville Printing for helping us with some new business cards.
